This list of 143 student loan forgiveness programs starts with national student loans. While many programs limit forgiveness to a maximum value, the actual amount varies from person to person.

Federal Student Loan Forgiveness Programs

There are student loan forgiveness programs for the various branches of the military and federal agencies. Receiving payments from one loan forgiveness program may affect the recipient’s eligibility for another loan forgiveness program.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF)

Requirements: The PSLF is available for employees of a U.S. federal, state, local, or tribal government. It is also available for employees of a non-profit organization. The applicant must also work full-time (i.e., at least 30 hours per week).

Eligible Loan Types: Direct Loans and Direct Consolidation Loans.

Amount Forgiven: Full amount forgiven. The program forgives any remaining balance on an individual’s Direct Loans after they have made 120 monthly payments under an income-driven repayment plan.

Temporary Expanded Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (TEPSLF)

Requirements: The TEPSLF allows some unqualified repayment plans to become eligible for forgiveness if they did not initially qualify for the PSLF program. The applicant must have 10 years of full-time employment under a qualified employer. The amount paid in the 12 months prior to applying for TEPSLF must be at least as much as would have been paid under an income-driven repayment plan.

Eligible Loan Types: Direct loans and Direct Consolidation Loans. The following plans are also eligible (which are not eligible through PSLF): the Graduated Repayment Plan, the Extended Repayment Plan, the Consolidation Standard Repayment Plan, and the Consolidation Graduated Repayment Plan.

Amount Forgiven: Full amount forgiven. The program forgives any remaining balance on an individual’s Direct Loans after they have made 120 monthly payments under a repayment plan while working full-time for a qualified employer.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program

Requirements: The applicant must be a full-time, highly qualified teacher for five consecutive academic years. The applicant must have taught in a school or educational service agency that serves low-income students. To be considered highly qualified, teachers must have earned a bachelor’s degree, fully certified, and not be operating under an emergency, provisional, or temporary certificate.

Eligible Loan Types: Direct Loans and Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL).

Amount Forgiven: The Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program forgives up to $17,500 in Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loans. The $17,500 is only for teachers in special subject matter areas, such as mathematics, science, or special education. Other subject matter areas are eligible to receive up to $5,000. A teacher may receive both the $17,500 and the $5,000 if they have loans under both the Direct Loan Program and the Federal Family Education Loan Program.

Borrower Defense Loan Discharge Program

Requirements: The Borrower Defense Loan Discharge Program is a forgiveness program for loan holders who were wronged by their college or university. The borrower must demonstrate they enrolled or continued to attend a school based on misleading information or other misconduct and suffered harm.

Eligible Loan Types: Only Direct Loans are eligible for this discharge program.

Amount Forgiven: If the application is successful, the loans related to the application will be discharged. You may receive a refund of payments made previously.

National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program

Requirements: The NHSC Loan Repayment Program is available to primary care clinicians who are willing to serve at least 2 years in an NHSC-approved Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). Eligible primary care areas include medical, dental, and mental health. Maternity care health professionals working in a Maternity Care Target Area (MCTA) are also eligible. The program prioritizes applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program also prioritizes applicants who have completed specialized training needed by the NHSC.

Eligible Loan Types: For undergraduate or graduate education tuition, other educational expenses, or cost of attendance. Consolidated or refinanced loans from a government (federal, state, or local) or private student loan lender and only include qualifying educational loans.

Amount Forgiven: For physicians, nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and physician assistants: Full-time service for 2 years can earn a participant up to $75,000 in loan forgiveness. Part-time service for 2 years can earn a participant up to $37,500 in loan forgiveness. 

For other eligible professions: Full-time service can earn a participant up to $50,000 and part-time service can earn a participant up to $25,000.

Clinicians who are proficient in Spanish may also be awarded $5,000.

Forgiveness with Income-Based Repayment (IBR)

Requirements: The applicant must have an IBR loan that has been in repayment beyond 25 years. If the loan originated after July 1st, 2014, the repayment term limit is 20 years.

Eligible Loan Types: Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, Direct PLUS Loans (made to graduate or professional students), Direct Consolidated Loans (not paid to parents), FFEL Loans (Stafford, FFEL PLUS not paid to parents, Consolidation), Consolidated Federal Perkins Loans.

Amount Forgiven: Full amount forgiven.

Forgiveness with Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR)

Requirements: The applicant must have an ICR loan that has been in repayment for more than 25 years. New applications are not being accepted unless the borrower has a consolidated PLUS loan paid to parents.

Eligible Loan Types: Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, Direct PLUS Loans (made to graduate or professional students), Direct Consolidated Loans, Consolidated FFEL Loans (FFEL PLUS made to parents), Consolidated Federal Perkins Loans.

Amount Forgiven: Full amount forgiven.

Forgiveness with Pay As You Earn (PAYE)

Requirements: The applicant must have a PAYE eligible loan that has been in repayment for at least 20 years. New applications are not being accepted.

Eligible Loan Types: Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, Direct PLUS Loans (made to graduate or professional students), Direct Consolidated Loans (not paid to parents).

Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan

Requirements: The eligibility is based on the original principal balance. Depending on the amount borrowed, the applicant may have undergraduate loans forgiven after 10 – 20 years. Graduate school loans may be forgiven after 10 – 25 years.

Eligible Loan Types: Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, Direct PLUS Loans (made to graduate or professional students), Direct Consolidated Loans (not paid to parents), Consolidated FFEL Loans (Stafford, FFEL PLUS not paid to parents, Consolidation), Consolidated Federal Perkins Loans.

Amount Forgiven: Full amount forgiven.

Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program

Requirements: The applicant must be a Registered Nurse, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, or Nurse Faculty (NF) working two years in a critical shortage facility or in an eligible nursing school as nurse faculty.

Eligible Loan Types: Public and Private Loans.

Amount Forgiven: Up to 85% of the loan forgiven.

USDA Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program

Requirements: The applicant must commit to 3 years of service in a designated veterinarian shortage area.

Eligible Loan Types: Loans that were received for attendance at an AVMA Council on Education accredited veterinary school. Private or public may qualify.

Amount Forgiven: Up to $25,000 forgiven annually over the 3 years ($75,000 in total).

AmeriCorps Education Award

Requirements: The applicant must complete their AmeriCorps term of service and enroll in the National Service Trust. Full-time employment for 1 year.

Eligible Loan Types: Direct Loans, Stafford Loans, Primary Care Loans, Federal Consolidated Loans, Nursing Student Loans, Health Education Assistance Loans, Supplemental Loans for Students,Federal Perkins Loans, and loans from state institutions of higher education.

Amount Forgiven: Maximum value of the Pell Grant for the fiscal year in which the term of national service is approved, 2024-2025: $7,395.

Federal Employee Student Loan Repayment Program

Requirements: This program is specifically for employees of a federal agency.

Eligible Loan Types: Direct Loans, FFEL Loans, Federal Perkins Loans, and Loans made or insured under the Public Health Service Act.

Amount Forgiven: $10,000 forgiven annually up to a maximum of $60,000 for 6 years.

Requirements: Available specifically to those students who were unable to complete their programs because their school shut down.

Requirements: This program is specifically for students who have been totally and permanently disabled.

Federal Perkins Loan Cancellation

Requirements: The applicant must have worked a specific number of years, based on the profession, dedicated to a public good.

Eligible Loan Types: Federal Perkins loans.

Amount Forgiven: Full amount forgiven for most professions. 70% for AmeriCorps VISTA or Peace Corps volunteers. For certain teacher categories, forgiveness of loans may begin in the first years of service (i.e., 15% per year for the first and second years of service, 20% for the third and fourth years, 30% for the fifth year).

Federal Loan Bankruptcy Discharge

Requirements: For individuals with student loans going into bankruptcy and demonstrate that repayment would cause undue hardship.

Eligible Loan Types: Parent Plus loans and Federal student loans.

Amount Forgiven: Partial amount or full amount forgiven. Altered loan interest rates may also be an option.

False Certification Discharge

Requirements: This applicant must have had credentials falsified by their schools to receive a loan.

Unpaid Refund Discharge

Requirements: The applicant must have withdrawn from college and the college did not make a required return of the loan funds to the loan servicer.

National Health Service Corps State Loan Forgiveness Program

Requirements: Federal grants to the states fund this type of forgiveness, and each state administers the program. Qualifying borrowers must work in a Health Professional Shortage Area; each state has different eligible professions.

Eligible Loan Types: Federal and private loans.

Amount Forgiven: $50,000 for a two-year full-time service commitment.

Indian Health Service Loan Repayment Program

Requirements: The applicant must have committed at least 2 years of service in a health facility servicing American Indian and/or Alaskan Native communities.

Eligible Loan Types: Only health education loans related to the profession.

Amount Forgiven: Up to $50,000 forgiven for first two years. Contract can be extended for additional funds.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Loan Repayment Programs

Requirements: The borrower must work on NIH mission-relevant research, either within the NIH or outside the organization. Examples: AIDS research, Pediatric Research, or Contraception and Infertility Research.

Requirements: 3-year service commitment as an attorney for the Department of Justice.

Requirements: Must serve three years as a local, state, or federal public defender, local or state prosecutor, or a full-time employee of a nonprofit organization operating with local or state government providing legal representation to indigent persons in criminal or juvenile delinquency cases.

Requirements: Lottery-style program. The applicant must be an Attorney employed under a program that received funding from the Legal Services Corporation. The applicant must have an expectation of employment for 3 years with a debt of $75,000 in law school loans.

Eligible Loan Types: Law student loans, Federal Perkins loans, Stafford loans, Supplemental loans for students, Law Access loans, Law Student loans, Law-school Based loans, and other loans used to pay for law school or preparing for the bar exam.

Requirements: The program is available to employees of SEMA-member companies.

Alabama Math and Science Teacher Education Program (AMSTEP)

Requirements: The applicant must be a teacher who graduated beginning with 2018 or forward, endorsed in secondary math or science, and teaching math or science in a public school district or charter school.

Eligible Loan Types: Subsidized and unsubsidized Federal Loans..

Amount Forgiven: $5,000 per year forgiven. An additional $2,500 per year if working in an area with an acute teacher shorting in math or science.

Requirements: SHARP-1 requires a licensed practitioner to provide 80% direct patient care services at a primary care setting located in a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). SHARP-3 requires a licensed practitioner in a health-related profession to provide care in an underserved area.

Requirements: The applicant must be a teacher working in an area or subject matter that has a critical shortage of teachers.

Requirements: The applicant must be a physician (e.g., general medicine, psychiatry) or surgeon. The applicant must work at an eligible public service location.

California CalHealthCares Loan Repayment Program

Requirements: The applicant must be a physician or dentist providing care to Medi-Cal patients. Requires a 5-year service obligation.

Requirements: The applicant must be employed in a federally designated HPSA located in a rural or frontier county. Requires a 2-year commitment at the approved site.

Eligible Loan Types: Federal or commercial loans that were taken out exclusively for the profession the applicant is practicing.

Amount Forgiven: Full-time employment: $30,000 forgiven for physicians and $15,000 for other medical professions. Part-time employment: $15,000 for physicians and $7,500 for other medical professions.

Requirements: The applicant must be a professional practicing full-time at a HPLRP-certified site in a health professional shortage or medically underserved area. Both participants and potential work sites must complete applications for the program. Sites must recertify every even numbered years.

Eligible Loan Types: Loans intended for the cost of education necessary to obtain the health care degree.

Amount Forgiven: Up to $165,040.64 forgiven over 4 years for physicians and dentists. Up to $90,770.07 is forgiven for all other eligible providers.

Requirements: The applicant must work at a qualified non-profit or civil legal service for low-income DC residents.

Eligible Loan Types: This program is in itself a forgivable loan.

Florida Nursing Student Loan Forgiveness Program

Requirements: The applicant must be an LPN, RN, or ARNP and work full time at a designated facility that contributes towards a public good.

Eligible Loan Types: Loans must be incurred toward nursing education.

Amount Forgiven: Up to $4,000 forgiven annually for a maximum of 4 years.

Florida Bar Foundation Loan Repayment Program

Requirements: The applicant must be a lawyer who is employed by civil legal aid groups or spends more than half of their time providing legal services and legal assistance on behalf of civil legal aid organizations.

Eligible Loan Types: Student loans incurred while obtaining a law degree.

Amount Forgiven: $10,000 annually in the form of a new loan. The loan is forgiven annually if the applicant remains employed as a civil legal aid attorney.

Requirements: The applicant must be a full-time teacher or librarian in a public school district. 

Eligible Loan Types: Government and commercial loans (not received from the Critical Needs Teacher Forgivable Loan Program, William Teacher Forgivable Loan Program, or Teacher Education Scholars Forgivable Loan Program).

Amount Forgiven: Working in a critical shortage area: Up to $4,000 forgiven for the first year. Able to renew for up to 2 years ($5,000 for the second year and $6,000 for the third year). Working in a non-critical shortage area: Up to $1,500 forgiven for the first year. Able to renew for up to 2 years ($2,500 for the second year and $3,500 for the third year).

Missouri Health Professional Loan Repayment Program

Requirements: The applicant must be a health professional who is willing to service an underserved HPSA area for 2 years. Each year, the eligible professional and practitioner types will be determined based on evidence associated with the greatest needs in the best interest of the public.

Eligible Loan Types: Government and commercial student loans incurred while obtaining their degree.

Amount Forgiven: Up to $65,000 forgiveness for doctoral degree. Amounts are dependent on degree and profession area.

Montana Agriculture Student Loan Assistance Program

Requirements: The applicant must be a farmer or rancher who is the primary owner, heir, or successor and participates in the day-to-day operations of the facility and agrees to help run the facility for at least 5 years. The applicant must also have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an approved Montana college or university.

Eligible Loan Types: Must be a student loan used to obtain a degree from a list of eligible Montana colleges.

Amount Forgiven: The minimum amount forgiven is $5,000 dispersed over 5 years. The total amount forgiven may not exceed 50% of the total amount of the outstanding loans.

Requirements: The applicant must be a registered nurse and work in a Montana state prison or Montana state hospital.

Amount Forgiven: Up to 50% of a $30,000 loan balance. Payments are limited to annual payments of $3,750 over four years.

Requirements: The applicant must be an attorney who works at an approved non-profit organization dedicated to serving the legal needs of low-income individuals and families in Montana.

Requirements: The applicant must be a healthcare provider (i.e., Dentist, Dental Hygienist, Pharmacist, Physician, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant) who commits to 3 years of service in an underserved area.

Amount Forgiven: Full-time: 70% of their debt balance, up to $50,000. Part-time: 35% of their debt balance up to $25,000 debt. Full-time providers with less than $29,000 and part-time providers with less than $15,000 in debt are eligible to receive up to 100% of their debt balance.

Requirements: The applicant must be an attorney who works in an IOLTA legal services organization offering civil legal assistance to PA residents without charge. Their annual salary must not exceed $75,000 unless their annual debt is greater than 10% of their annual salary.

Eligible Loan Types: Educational debt is based on loans from commercial and government lending institutions, as well as university or other private institutional loans associated with educational debt.

South Carolina Teachers and Career Changers Loan Forgiveness

Requirements: The applicant must be a teacher teaching a critical subject area or critical geographic location.

Eligible Loan Types: This program is in itself a forgivable loan.

Amount Forgiven: 20% of the loan forgiven or $3,000 each full year of teaching. Teaching in both a critical subject and critical geographical area will increase the forgiveness rate to 33.3% or $5,000 a year.

South Dakota Dentist Loan Repayment for Service Program

Requirements: The applicant must be a dentist who commits to participating in the Medicaid program and be credentialed by Delta Dental. The applicant must choose from two options: 15% of patients are Medicaid-insured and accept one case from the Donated Dental Services Program; or 30% of patients are Medicaid-insured and accept two cases from the Donated Dental Services Program. 

Eligible Loan Types: Qualified loans include government, commercial, and foundation loans for actual costs paid for tuition, reasonable education expenses, and reasonable living expenses related to the graduate or undergraduate education of a dentist from an accredited school of dentistry.

Amount Forgiven: First option: Up to $75,000 over 5 years plus $5,000 in bonus opportunities each year; Second option: Up to $125,000 over 5 years plus $5,000 in bonus opportunities each year.

Tennessee Graduate Nursing Loan Forgiveness

Requirements: The applicant must be enrolled in a master’s or post-master’s degree nursing education program. The applicant must enter a faculty or administrative position at a college or university in Tennessee in a nursing education program for 4 years.

Amount Forgiven: Up to 25% of the amount borrowed, plus interest, after each year of service.

Requirements: The applicant must have taught for at least one year and be a teacher certified in a critical shortage teaching field or be a teacher in a critical shortage community.

Eligible Loan Types: The loan must be evidenced by a promissory note which required the loan proceeds to be used to pay for the teacher’s cost of attendance at college.

Utah Rural Physician Loan Repayment Program (RPLRP)

Requirements: The applicant must be a physician who must commit to a 2-year term of service in a rural hospital and practice in primary care, ob/gyn, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics or internal medicine. 

Eligible Loan Types: Loans related to obtaining a medical professional education.

Amount Forgiven: Up to $40,000 forgiven annually and the employing hospital is required to provide a 100% match. With employer agreement, an additional $40,000 may be awarded for a one-year extension. Maximum award is $120,000.

Utah Health Care Workforce Financial Assistance Program

Requirements: The applicant must be a health provider providing direct care to patients and work in a HPSA with a commitment of 3 years.

Eligible Loan Types: “Educational loan” means a commercial, government, or government-guaranteed loan taken to pay educational expenses.

Amount Forgiven: Amount forgiven dependent on credential. Up to $75,000 over 3 years for physicians, dentists, and pharmacists. Up to $30,000 for registered nurses. Approved site employers must also provide a 20% match to the provider’s award.

Priority is given to attorneys practicing in underserved geographic areas of Vermont or focusing on underserved legal areas or areas that serve vulnerable and working people.

Requirements: The applicant must be a graduate from University of Virginia School of Law after 2023 and who works in qualifying legal employment in the public or private sector making less than $100,000 annually.

Amount Forgiven: For applicants making less than $80,000 annually, the full amount of loan is forgiven. For applicants making between $80,000 and $100,000 annually, the amount will be based on their salary.
