Average student loan debt per borrower by state 3 on EducationData

Student Loan Debt by State

Federal student loan debt is over $1.6 trillion. Including the District of Columbia, that’s the equivalent of $31.4 billion per state. Debt varies among the states much as it varies among races, genders, and age groups. One state’s residents owe an average of $29,000 each, whereas another has an average debt of $55,000 per borrower. These variations may be due to socioeconomic factors, such as a higher concentration of health specialists with medical school debt. One of the few consistent facts is that in every single state (including D.C. and Puerto Rico), adults 25 to 34 years are the largest indebted age group.

  • D.C. residents are the most likely to have student loan debt among U.S. residents.
  • Excluding D.C., Maryland borrowers have the highest average student loan debt.
  • Aside from D.C. and Maryland, Georgia is the only place where the average student loan debt exceeds $40,000.
  • Ohio residents are the most likely to have student loan debt among U.S. residents.
  • Hawaiians are the least likely to have student loan debt.
  • In the contiguous 48 states, Wyoming residents are the least likely to have student loan debt.
